Season 1 Bonus Episode JBYF Podcast: 20 Gunas of Ayurveda

What are the 20 opposites that attract?

Here we get into these polar opposites and explain why they attract each other. We discuss their connection to the doshas, physiology, and sustaining a balanced routine. Ever wonder why, you run hot and crave spicy foods, but love cold weather, or run cold all the time, and much prefer warm weather? Maybe you love the sun and the beach and your partner loves the mountains and glaciers....

Like Paula Abdul's famous song, "Opposite's Attract," it's true. Opposites naturally gravitate to one another. Granted, like the three doshas, they work together to form a whole.

Ayurveda also identifies twenty qualities known as gunas that can be used to describe every substance or experience. These are different from the 3 Gunas that we learned from the yoga philosophy that governs the chakras. (Discussed in the Ayurveda Yoga Teacher Training).

These, are opposing qualities organized into ten pairs known as Samanya & Vishesh - the principle of similarity and opposites.

  • Heavy/ Light

  • Slow / Fast

  • Dull / Sharp, Penetrating

  • Cold / Hot

  • Oily / Dry

  • Smooth/ Rough

  • Dense / Liquid

  • Soft / Hard

  • Stable / Mobile

  • Gross / Subtle

  • Cloudy / Clear

The gunas are essential to understanding the Ayurvedic principle that 'like increases like' and that 'opposites balance'. i.e. Taking company with lighthearted people vs. negative, dark, and irritated people. You will discover those qualities will increase in yourself.

Another way to think about this principle is that our physical body is made up of the food we eat. If we are eating food that is wholesome, nutritious, and pure (free from chemicals) then the actual physical makeup of our body would also be pure and wholesome. Considering the qualities in whatever we take in from our experience is part of living in Ayurveda.

Dr.Wallace, professor of Ayurveda at MIU (Maharishi International University), describes Ayurveda as “enlivening the inner intelligence- the field of consciousness). Maharishi Ayurveda views the body as an expression of intelligence. Disease results from losing connection with this underlying field of intelligence.”

It is important to note that the difference between Ayurveda and Maharishi Ayurveda is the consciousness-based aspect of Maharishi Ayurveda and as Dr.Wallace mentions, “through proper education and guidance, Maharishi Ayurveda enables each person to take responsibility for their own health.”

Doshas

Vata, Pitta, Kapha

The Doshas are composed of two main elements each. The image above is from MIU Ayurveda Program. The Doshas each have various governors that they represent. Vata is responsible for transportation, communication, and movement. Pitta is responsible for metabolic processes, digestive fire, and transformation. Kapha dosha is responsible for lubrication, cohesion, and structure. They work together to form the human physiological system and have respective areas within the body that they also contribute towards.

In our JBYF 200-hour Ayurveda Yoga Teacher Training, we dive deep into this system. These doshas, when stable, will generate a healthy constitution. Each of these doshas is also governed by respective qualities known as gunas. These gunas are different from the gunas we learn in yoga. However, slightly similar in their respective qualities of the yogic gunas. The Ayurvedic gunas are as follows:

Vata: Light, dry, coarse, cold, rough, subtle, irregular, and mobile

Pitta: Light, hot, sharp, oily, mobile, active, quick, liquid

Kapha: Heavy, cold, moist, dull, soft, sticky, and static
