Season 1 Bonus Episode JBYF Podcast: Vata Pitta Kapha Doshas Constitutions Explained
In this episode, we dive a bit deeper into the "bodies" of the constitutions and how they integrate within the physiology to serve as the manifestation of the unmanifest. Like the Koshas, the doshas work together through the various levels of our unique composition to express physically what is happening within. VPK, are the essential components of how we take in our surroundings and channel them for optimal quality of life.
This can be expressed for example, if you are not feeling well. When one does not feel at their maximum, they tend to also resemble on the outside, how they are feeling on the inside. If a relationship ended, the humans involved may express on the surface, their emotional discord. If we are feeling peaceful and happy on the inside, then we radiate that expansiveness on the surface.
Ayurvedic Principles
Before you learn how Ayurveda can help you, you must first learn how to see yourself from an Ayurvedic perspective. The first step is to understand some key Ayurvedic principles, and lenses through which Ayurveda views the universe.
These Ayurveda basics are foundational tools for:
Interpreting the laws of nature
Identifying various states of health or imbalance
Charting a course toward improved well-being
Examining these core principles will also help illustrate what makes Ayurveda such a timeless art and science.
Doshic Constitutions
What is a constitution?
As we learned earlier, a doshic constitution is the unique and fixed ratio of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha that represents optimal health for you. This remains constant for your whole life. The end goal isn’t to equalize the proportions of your constitution, but to maintain your natural ratio and to encourage the healthiest expression of each dosha.

This podcast takes a look into the Fundamental Principles of Ayurveda.
The Three Doshas
"The Three Doshas are the inner bits of intelligence of the body that govern all biological and most psychological processes. They are how Ayurveda defines and understands the incredibly sophisticated inner intelligence of the mind/body system. The Ayurvedic perspective on inner intelligence serves as a basis for the beginning of your studies in Ayurveda." - Professor Sultan Sala. M.A
What does it mean by imbalances?
Unlike your constitution, your imbalances will vary, and you will have increases in one or more of the doshas above the amount appropriate for your constitution. Any doshas that are elevated, need to be pacified (or reduced) in order to return to optimal health. The recommendations throughout the yoga teacher training, go over the asanas that work to balance the various Ayurvedic constitutions. We will review a few as we progress along the min-course and or training.
---------------------------------
Vata Dosha
Comprises the primary bodily functions of transportation (of food throughout the digestive tract, nutrients throughout the cells, and subtle proteins and minerals), movement (of thoughts, body parts, blood throughout the body, and signals from the nervous system), and communication (between organs, cells, and all bodily systems) (Salah, 2020).
Vata Dosha is represented by the elements of Air and Space
In a balanced state, Vata dosha expresses itself as balanced movement, inhalation, expiration, enthusiasm, balanced development of the Dhatus, and balanced release of waste products, or Malas.
The main place we see the functioning of the Vata Dosha is in the Srotas, or channels of the body, such as veins, arteries, and the digestive tract.
Vata Dosha exhibits the qualities of dry, light, dry cold, rough, quick-moving, and subtle. Vata-type constitutions are typical of a lighter and thinner build, with high creativity and quick thinking, a tendency to worry, and an aversion to cold weather

Pitta Dosha
Comprises the primary bodily functions of metabolism and digestion – also called the Agnis, as well as the transformation of whatever we take in from any experience, such as food, the company with people, or education, into bliss (Salah, 2020).
Pitta Dosha is represented by the elements of Fire and Water.
In a balanced state, Pitta expresses itself in the form of good vision and digestion, normal temperature, hunger and thirst, bodily softness, luster, happiness, and intelligence.
Pitta Dosha exhibits the qualities of slightly oily, light, hot, sharp, flowing, liquid, and pungent. Those of Pitta-type constitutions tend to have medium builds, a reddish complexion, sharp language, hunger and digestion, a tendency towards irritability and temper, and a sharp intellect and character.

Kapha Dosha
Comprises the primary functions of the structural integrity, cohesion, and lubrication of all tissues, (Dhatus) in the body, and exhibits the qualities of oily, heavy, wet cold, slow, stable, sticky, dull, and sweet (Salah, 2020).
Kapha Dosha is represented by the elements of Water and Earth.
Kapha expresses itself in a balanced state through unctuousness, cohesion, heaviness, virility, strength, forbearance, patience, and the absence of greed.
Individuals of Kapha-type constitutions tend to be of solid, heavy builds with oily, smooth skin, thicker, darker, and longer hair, and slow or mild digestion and appetite. They also tend to exhibit great strength and endurance, as well as tranquil and patient personalities.
Each of us has a combination of these three doshas in our bodies at any given time. There is a combination of doshas we are born with, called our constitution, Ayurvedic body type, or Prakriti in Sanskrit. We also have a state of balance (vikriti) which represents the doshas that are elevated within our body at a given time. If the doshas accumulate beyond healthy limits (those determined by one’s constitution), they can wreak havoc on our health.
