How do I contact JBYF if I have additional questions?

The best way to get in contact with JBYF is to email us at jaibhaktiyoga@gmail.com with all of your questions or concerns. We’d love to hear from you!

Just have a few minor concerns? Go ahead and secure your place by making your deposit. We have a place on the deposit form for you to ask all of your questions. Christina will get back to you as soon as possible addressing all of your concerns. You can make your deposit here.

Local Currency and Exchange Rate

Costa Rica’s official currency is the Colón. The exchange rate averages between 600-610 colones to the dollar.  However, US dollars are generally accepted in all areas except for some smaller villages or towns. If you do spend US dollars, keep in mind that you will receive your change in colones. It is recommended that you bring denominations of $20 or less as higher denominations are often not accepted in local shops and markets. It is not recommended to change money at the airport.

Your local American bank is able to order the amount of colones you need and it is best to order a few days before your trip to ensure you have received the money in time. $10,000 or more may need to be declared upon arrival. (Unless you are buying a house there, we do not think you will need that much)

Water

We take water very seriously in Costa Rica! Drink LOTS of water, as the change in altitude and environment, may trigger some headaches. Adding a little ginger to your water and peppermint is a wonderful way to stay refreshed and hydrated. There are plenty of places to buy bottled water and herbs. You may also consider bringing your favorite water bottle to refill and store in your refrigerator to keep it cool.

Electrical Power

The country uses 120V, 60Hz current, and the same for wall outlets. This is the same as the US, so guests from the US will not need adaptors. Be mindful of blow dryers, as there is very high humidity in CR. We encourage you to “go natural” and reduce energy usage. There are hairdryers on the property and can be requested upon arrival.

Clothing

Guests should bring clothes for active daytime, such as hiking sandals/shoes, yoga clothes, beachwear,  swimwear, flip flops, and casual wear such as; shorts, sundresses, tank tops, and anything made of light gauzy material. The nights can be chilly (more so during the green season) so a light jacket or a loose-fitting long sleeve top and light pants are recommended. We also recommend a rain jacket or poncho during the green season. (But I bring a rain jacket all year).

Waterfall Hike

This adventure is a bit treacherous and adventurous as well as A LOT of FUN! Not for the faint of heart and are willing to get your feet wet. We highly suggest you wear water shoes to walk through the Rio and over slippery rocks. Everything is natural and we follow a faint but natural trail to the falls. There are other paths that take you to the higher waterfalls that lead into the one we hike to below and all 3 you have the option to dive off of the rocks into the water.

COVID-19 Protocols and Requirements

Amor de Mar will bring in a doctor from the town to conduct our COVID-19 tests 72 hours prior to departures. This is included in the cost of your trip and you will NOT have to pay extra for it. However, if you plan to stay after the retreat, you WILL need to arrange for your tests on your own and will need to arrange payment for it on your own.

You are required to fill out the Passport De Salud which is a health assessment you will need to show upon arriving in Costa Rica. Please be sure to do this prior to leaving the USA as you will NOT be able to leave the US or enter Costa Rica without it. This is YOUR responsibility and you MUST do this. Failure to do this will result in holding the plane up for everyone on it, causing them to miss connecting flights and we DO NOT want to inconvenience anyone. This is the link to use to do get your “QR” code prior to check-in at your local departure airport.

Please do not put us in this position. Use this link to fill it out: https://salud.go.cr/

Helpful Apps

We recommend downloading the free communication app, ‘Whatsapp’ or Zello.  It is very helpful for communicating with each other and members of your group through data and wifi. If you will be navigating yourself through Costa Rica, before or after your retreat here, the free navigation app ‘Waze’ is beyond helpful to have as most locations have a Waze link that they can send to you or you can look up directly.

Uber is available throughout Costa Rica. You are also able to hire private transport. Wagner will be our driver and he is very reliable, as well as, his husband Marley, whom you will meet at the retreat center. He is available to take you to Santa Teresa, and any other nearby city for an arranged fee that you will discuss directly with him.

Daylight and Time Zone

Daylight begins to show between 5:00 and 5:15 am, with an incredible sunrise at approximately 5:30 am and sunset beginning around 5:45 pm. This is a wonderful time to do your meditation and connect to the ocean and jungle energy. Maintaining a sacred space for yourself. Nature moves at the rhythm of the sun, so you will also feel this time change with the animals, ocean, Rio, and jungle.

Weather

The green season begins at the end of April and continues until mid-December. It is a beautiful time to be in Costa Rica as the lush tropical vegetation is in full force. During the green season, the rain generally, with the exception, does not begin until late afternoon or evening, leaving a full day to explore in dry comfort.

Guests With Disabilities

Amor de Mar is located at sea level and has ground floor accommodations for guests with disabilities. If you use a walker or wheelchair, we have an Ocean View room specifically created for ADA compliance. There are also 2 jungle view rooms with compliance.

Excursions

All excursions are extra aside from the waterfall and beach hike. You are welcome to book massages, horseback riding, ziplining, ATVs (best way to get around), tours, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, etc in town or through the hotel at an additional cost.

Visa and Passport Requirements

Guests traveling from the USA and Canada (and many other countries) do not need a visa. You will just need to provide a return ticket or evidence of onward travel. Your passport must have at least 6 months validity remaining to enter the country. If you are from another country outside of the USA and Canada we will work with you to figure out your visa and passport requirements.

Flights

Flights are not included in the price for the trip. You must book this own your own. Delta, American, United, Copa, all fly to Costa Rica. You will then need to walk over to the domestic terminal and connect to the domestic flight. I highly suggest you first book your local flight from San Jose to Tambor before booking your flight from your country of origin as you will need to ensure you arrive 60min prior to departure from San Jose to Tambor. I use Sansa and Costa Rica GreenAirways. If you use CostaRicagreenairways.com you will need to pay $2.60usd to arrive and depart the Tambor airport.  Please give yourself about an hour to get through customs upon arrival in San Jose prior to your connecting local flight.

I do not suggest using the Ferry or bus to get to Montezuma, as you will be in commute for upwards of 4hours. It is best to hop on the small flight which is just 30mins.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted throughout Montezuma, and really everywhere. Capital One MC and Amex do not charge a foreign conversion fee. However, there are secure ATMs in Montezuma to withdrawal money or colones. Once the ATM runs out of money, you will need to either hire Wagner to take you to Cobano’s central bank (Banco National) to withdraw funds or wait for the ATMs to be refilled.

Alcoholic Beverages

You are welcome to enjoy as you wish. There is a lovely store in Montezuma that has a selection of local and imported wines and beers to enjoy. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants to explore the local cuisine and entertainment.

Special Dietary Needs

The menu at Amor De Mar is created with food sensitivities in mind. The kitchen staff is fully versed in many types of foods and special dietary needs and can accommodate any special request. Please let us know in advance of any dietary restrictions.

Those staying in the Casitas have their very own full Kitchens with pots and pans and can cook to their heart’s desire. The same grocery store where you buy your wine can also be where you get your groceries. There is a farmers Market the weekend we arrive, so you can go to the town and purchase local produce to make at the Casitas or use the grill out front.

You are also welcome to hire your own local chef. Please reach out to me about coordinating this.

WiFi

The WiFi is sporadic at the hotel. Although it works and it is strong, sometimes “universe” happens and we lose connection. If you have your own wifi adapter, I encourage you to bring it. There are also plenty of coffee shops in town to hang at and use wifi as needed.
