The Koshas: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Welcome to the Koshas

Kosha means sheath, and Maya means illusory. These suffixes indicate that these are illusory sheaths of embodiment that may appear to separate us from Source, but in fact, do not. Thus the Ananda-maya-kosha would mean, "the illusory sheath of bliss that appears to separate us from the whole." All of the koshas can be translated the same way. This is a subtle way of reinforcing that even though we are embodied, we are not and never have been separate from Source.

There are 5 koshas named as follows:

  1. Anamaya Kosha - Physical Body

  2. Pranamaya Kosha - Energetic Body

  3. Manamaya Kosha - Mental Body

  4. Vijnamaya Kosha - Wisdom Body

  5. Anandamaya Kosha - Bliss Body

Anandamaya Kosha is the fifth of the Koshas. The subtle body layers that govern how we respond to life. This kosha is connected to the highest Self of awakening to samadhi or bliss consciousness. It is where we are one with the Divine source and we remain here briefly. At times, some attain this level of Unity Consciousness reaching the 7th state of consciousness. Mostly experienced briefly at the end of yoga nidra or yoga class, as well as during transcendental meditation.

Anandamaya Kosha, the Bliss body and the 5th Kosha. It is the junction between formless Source in form. Taking the abstract and making it tangible. It is also a space where we enter into Sarahsrara chakra and discover Samadhi. It is a place where Shiva and Shakti or consciousness and energy meet and intermingle. It is experienced as a sense of pure silent joy. A space of abiding stillness and perfect contentment without cause or reason.
