5 Main Principles Holding Students Back from Embodying the Practice

Namaste Y’all,

I want this to be interactive, so please comment, thumbs up, or DM me, if you feel connected to something we are talking about or want to share.

Yoga is Not a Performance pt.2

Is what we are talking about today.
How did we feel when we went to our first yoga class?

Today, we are emphasizing 5 main principles:

  • Inclusivity

  • Intimidation

  • Fear

  • Showing Up for YourSelf

  • Finding the right Teacher

We discussed Victoria’s message to me last week, and specifically her quote:

“It’s so true! I tried to participate in a yoga session before and I quit a quarter of the way through it because the poses were impossible for me. And it was a beginner’s class! I don’t even know what type of yoga it was. All I know is that  I left and never looked back! Lol”

Inclusivity - Let’s bring it back to how we felt the first time we entered a yoga class. My first time entering a live, public yoga class was Bikram. I arrived with a long sleeve shirt and matching long thick pants and I was not able to take them off, cause I didn’t dress for the class. I share this story in the video podcast. I literally thought I was at an Olympic gymnastics tryout, and I was way out of my league.

I too felt like Victoria…

I just want to say, GIVE YOGA ANOTHER CHANCE

I went back and kept showing up at different studios and classes until I found the one that was perfect for me. I then deepened my practice with them and became a yoga teacher and here I am today many moons later.

Who feels like Victoria and me? Post below or send me a message…

2. Intimidation - We tend to focus on what “they” are doing and not so much what “we” are doing for ourselves on our mat.

We need to remember that those other students are on a different journey. They are exactly where they are at this moment for the very reason you are.

To learn and to grow.

What your body can do, may not be attainable for my body, and guess what? That’s ok. You don’t need to go that deep, or that far. We are all made differently and perfectly imperfect.

We need not worry about what Susie Q is doing on her mat. I share a story about my learnings from a fellow yogi back in 2007 in my video blogcast.

Has anyone ever felt like that? Looked around and felt inadequate? Comment or post, share with the tribe.

3. Fear - to express yourself fully on your mat. To fall, use props, laugh, cry, humm, or rest.

Remember, no one is looking at you (except the teacher) if you are in person (or zoom).

What is the biggest fear you are creating for yourself? We get in our own way. It’s time to give yourself permission to enjoy yourSelf and your journey? Share with me here. Don’t be shy, you are in a supportive group.

4. Showing up For YourSelf - How you show up for your practice is how you show up in life. Bring your ENTIRE SELF.

“All heart in” as Baron Baptiste says.

Use your practice to hone in on your power and take it back.

5. Finding the Right Teacher and Practice- This will take some time, and I’ll make a few suggestions of some great teachers I am familiar with below, but do your research!!

Ask yourself the following questions:

a) What are your needs?

b) What is your goal for practicing yoga?

c) What style of yoga are you seeking? Is it a variety?

d) What is the tone of voice that you align with?

e) Do you want to practice at home, online, or with a group of students?

Your Lifework is to Journal about:

How you are showing up for Yourself and what is a way you can either, give yoga another chance, or begin a daily commitment to a new practice?

I’d love to hear from you, so please be sure to comment and post below.
