The Relationship Between Consciousness and Health through Ayurveda

The Relationship between Consciousness and Health Part 1

What is "Inner Intelligence"?
“The inner intelligence of the body that governs all biological and most psychological processes. They are how Ayurveda defines and understands the incredibly sophisticated inner intelligence of the mind/body system. The Ayurvedic perspective on the inner intelligence serves as a basis for the study of Ayurveda.” - Sultan Sala

Pragya Aparadh, when one unknowingly disrupts the laws of nature, such as improper sleep, food, or digestion, and letting oneself make the mistake of being stuck in a cycle of regressive intellect. "No longer identifying with its own source but that of the outer experience." - Sultan Sala This constant cycle (or samskara) attributes to the root of all disorders. The entire physiology is affected and expressed by what we consume within and around our environment. The food one takes in, relationships, professions, and education, all contribute to the effect of the chemical, emotional, physical, and mental expressions that impacts the conscious development of an individual.

The cause of all dis-ease, which gives rise to disease is when one is caught up in identifying with the superficial, surface level of the small self, the shadow self, and loses connection to the innate pure Being within. Seeing 10,000 moons on the reflection of the water instead of 1 as the old Buddhist proverb says.

"Your breath. Your senses. Your eyes. EVERYTHING can become a portal to awakening and an expression of the divine current in you…" - Raja Choudhury

The Three Little Doshas

A dosha represents the intelligence of the mind/body. There are three doshas which all represent a different type of intelligence and governing principle in the body. (Watch or Listen to the Intro to Ayurveda podcast Here)

When the three doshas are balanced, the inner intelligence of the body/mind is in harmony, meaning that disease will not exist. When these doshas are imbalanced, the body/mind will reflect imbalance and disease. These three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. (Watch or Listen to the Podcast Here). The body/mind itself is made up of 5 elements or Pancha mahabhutas: earth, water, fire, air, and space.

Each dosha governs a certain group of elements:

  • Vata governs air and space

  • Pitta governs fire and water

  • Kapha governs water and earth.

These doshas also have their own functions and qualities.

  • Vata is responsible for transportation, movement, and communication governing the functioning of the channels (srotas) of the body.

  • Pitta is responsible for digestion, metabolism, and transformation governing the functioning of the metabolic processes (agnis) of the body.

  • Kapha is responsible for structure, cohesion, and lubrication governing the functioning of the tissues (dhatus) of the body.

The three doshas also have different qualities/attributes (gunas). There are 20 altogether and come in a pair which we go into in the 20 Gunas of Ayurveda podcast (watch or listen here).

  • Vata is cold, moving, dry, light, rough, quick, and subtle.

  • Pitta is slightly oily, flowing, light, hot, sharp, pungent, and liquid.

  • Kapha is oily, sweet, dull, heavy, cold (wet), slow, stable, and sticky.

These different qualities are presented to show how the doshas are expressed in the mind/body.

The Three Doshas are the governors of the way our body moves, communicates, processes, holds itself together, transforms, and evolves.

It’s part of how we move through the process of development, taking in everything from all the experiences of life and how we consciously maintain our physiology. Our bodies are the manifestation of what it takes in from the surface level to the depth of our Being. The three doshas, Vata, is associated with wind and space. Pitta with fire and water, Kapha associated with Water and Earth, govern the manifest form of how we are doing on the inside expressed on the outside.

Movement, transportation, and communication is a vata trait that moves PItta, processing emotions, food, and nutrients in the body and how they move throughout the channels, ultimately nourishing the entire body from DNA to veins. Pitta is associated with the elements fire and earth, governing digestion, metabolism, and transformation. Fire purifies and this is the purification center. Breaking down to build nutritional compounds from the experiences transforming into bliss. Kapha governs lubrication, structure, and cohesion. Keeping the body lubricated for healthy joints, organs, cells, and genes. Consider the myofascial system that maintains the structure of the system through lubrication and coherence. If we have a sensation in one part of the myofascial system, chances are, we feel it in another part of the body.
